DoVES is always looking for Volunteers so if your interested here are some things you can do to help the shelter:

* You can help with fundraisers

* You can be a Booth or Display person which is where you would sit and at a table at a certain event and hand out information.

* You could be a Public Information Supplier which is similar to Outreach.  You would give out DoVES brochures, cards, and other educational material to the public.

* You could actually work in-shelter with victims maybe fill-in for a staff member that is wanting vacation time.

* You could be a volunteer victim advocate in a different county, if you viewed our community outreach page you will see that DoVES serves Jefferson, Jackson, Brown, Doniphan, Nemaha and Atchison Counties. We could use volunteers for both Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Please call for information about this.

* You could also attend court with victims of both Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.

* Babysitting children while mothers re in group at the group location.

* Be a volunteer Child Advocate for children who have had to leave violent situations.

* Do a parenting group, please notice educational background is preferable with this subject.

* Share a hobby or skill with the residents in a group setting.

* Donate free labor such as painting, building, lifting, yard beautification, and other types of maintenance.

* Help a victim move, this can be simply you driving a vehicle and them doing the lifting or you can help lift as well. You can set you time frame you are available and be notified in advance.

* During Christmas time you can adopt a family

* We have been looking into finding temporary foster homes for pet/s that are needing to leave with their family. A lot of times women and children have to leave their pet behind with the abusive partner who may have abused the pet as well. We have been hoping to work something out with these types of situations. We haven’t ironed out the possible flaws that might arise with this at this point. But we know that pets are family to so if you are interested please let us know.

* Storage space. This has been an issue for the shelter and the residents and is on-going. We take furniture as donation but we do not really have space to store it. So sometimes it goes on the porch until someone needs it. We would like to keep a larger supply but do not have extra space. Another problem is after a resident is no longer in immediate danger she would like to get her furniture. But again, we can not store this due to space issues. So there have been times that the person loses her belongings.

* You could donate an office space.

* Donate auto repair and/or parts for clients in need.

* You can just simply donate, the shelter needs whatever types of items you would need for your home. I will add a list of needs though.

* If you have any other ideas you are welcome to share them with us.

Please note: For volunteer positions where you work with victims and their children you will need to complete a certain amount of hours of training that pertain to the position you would like to do. You will need to fill out a volunteer application. Some positions will require a criminal background check.
